Community-Driven Housing: A State-of-the-Art Review – A Study Conducted within the Framework of the "Rock the Block" Project

As part of the Rock the Block project, the study "Community-Driven Housing: A State-of-the-Art Review" was created, presenting 15 outstanding housing and community projects from around the world. Each case study highlights different approaches to governance, financing, design, and community development, offering valuable insights into addressing housing challenges.


Rock the Block (www.rocktheblock.gr) is an innovative pilot project focused on affordable housing and vibrant neighborhoods, through technical interventions and creative actions. It is supported by the European Union and the European Urban Initiative - Innovation Action, aligned with the principles of the New European Bauhaus.


The project aims to deliver multi-level solutions and key technical interventions to improve housing conditions in selected apartment buildings in the Municipality of Aigaleo, while also enhancing quality of life through communities of mutual support, solidarity, and institutional care.


The project is coordinated by the Municipality of Aigaleo and involves the following partners: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Institute of Regional Development of Panteion University, the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, the architectural firm AREA™, the urban and cultural development consultancy SYMBOLO GP, and civil society organizations Urbana, InCommOn, Organization Earth, and Ochi Paizoume.The good practices developed through the project will be transferred to the partner municipalities of Józsefváros (Budapest), Naples, and Paris.
